Design of affordable sustainable energy supply systems for residential buildings: A case study

The residential sector plays an important role to mitigate climate change due its high energy consumption. Polygeneration systems are a suitable alternative enabling efficient use of natural resources with low environmental impact. However, their deployment depends, among other factors, on the economic cost and legal restrictions. This work analyses potential reduction greenhouse gases emissions, expressed in CO 2 -equivalent emissions eq , buildings installing polygeneration considering current Spanish self-consumption regulation. is achieved through multiobjective optimization, applying Mixed Integer Linear Programming model, economic, aspects. Obtained results provide interesting replicable lessons, show interest collective installations, which remarkable reductions, above 65% respect conventional systems, can be at affordable cost. Technologies such as photovoltaic, reversible heat pumps, biomass thermal storage competitive when properly integrated. Furthermore, sale renewable electricity grid under net-billing scheme, prices, appropriate approach, aligned European policy. Nevertheless, regulation mostly for small-medium size buildings.
